    York Mills Residence Reveal

We love taking on projects with layouts that are not functional, and making them reach their full potential, and this one fit right in with that category.

    – THE BEFORE –

The kitchen was a galley kitchen that had four doorways leading into. This made it feel very closed off from the rest of the home, and also made it feel choppy. The challenge was opening up the space, and creating better flow without compromising storage.

    – THE AFTER –

The biggest difference was opening up the wall to the dining room. This gave an open concept feel and provided enough space to fit in an island that could seat three barstools. We also opened up the dining room to the family room, which allowed us to turn the old hallway from the kitchen into a small pantry that housed the fridge and maximized storage.

Even though we were working with a small footprint, we were able add in some really pretty details including an open base on the island. I love how this makes it feel more like a piece of furniture.

To balance the dark island and pantry doors, we had the vent hood cover made out of steel that had a slight patina. It gives just a bit of texture instead of being a solid finish.

This view of the sink is one of my favourite vignettes. Because of the window, we were not able to fit in full upper cabinets, however we had just enough space to fit in a picture style ledge which is perfect for housing glassware, cutting boards and smaller accents.
