When we were in the early stages of designing this collection, I took a step back to get a better idea of what kind of feel I wanted the textiles to have. I looked at what pieces are my go-to’s when designing a room, and why I loved incorporating them. I always find myself drawn to neutral spaces that mix patterns and textures, and pieces that feel raw and authentic. Nothing fussy, just something that will give a space a casual and comfortable feel.
I loved the idea of working with an artist to achieve a handmade textile, and was introduced to Canadian designer Natalie Gerber. After reaching out and sending over some inspirational images, Natalie designed some patterns for us, and we were able to work alongside her to customize them.

We took a lot of inspiration from traditional African textiles. I love the texture of the handmade fabrics and geometric patterns. We were able to finalize four prints that mixed shapes and scale. I wanted them to be easily paired together, and also look great on their own.

I asked Natalie if she could print the patterns lightly on the fabric, so you could see variation in the print. I wanted the textiles to look like they weren’t brand new, but instead look like they had been around for a while and had a story to tell.

We hand picked the back fabric for each print, and had them contrast to add some more depth. We had them sewn locally with hidden zippers, so the print would be the focus.

I love looking back at the design process, and seeing how each textile came together. The softly printed patterns show the crafters handiwork, and creates a really pretty texture. I can’t wait to see how you all style them in your homes!
