Hey there! If you are new here, we are Steve and Alyssa. We are a husband wife team and run an interior design business in Southern Ontario with our three small children – Coco, Jack and Flora. We were so honoured when we were asked by Linda from Calling it Home to be participants in this falls One Room Challenge and tackle our living room!
If you are not familiar with what the One Room Challenge is, let me fill you in! Twice a year a group of 20 bloggers redo one room in their home in just 6 weeks. Every week we will share an update on our room and at the end House Beautiful features all of the designs!
I am so excited to let you guys in on what some of our design plans are for the space! Ever since we moved into this house a year ago, I’ve been thinking about how to redo it and make it more functional for our family. We have 2 living spaces on our main floor, and with this one being directly off the foyer, I wanted to make it more of a formal living space, while still keep it feeling sort of casual.
Here is what the current space looks like:

As you can see, not much thought has gone into this room. All the furniture and accents were existing from when we lived in the condo and where just set up in this room when we moved.

Here is the space all emptied out!

This is the wall opposite the doorway off the foyer, so its one of the first things you see when entering our home.

This is the second doorway in the room and makes the room really tough to layout!
And finally, here is the design plan for the room!

Currently, the doorway off the foyer is off centre, so we will centre that to have a nice sightline to the new fireplace wall which will become a really pretty focal point in the room! We will also close off the second smaller doorway so we can centre the sofa on that wall.
We are also replacing the floors to match the hardwood upstairs. Its a little sad since this hardwood is in really great condition, however if you look closely in some of the images you will notice that there are some transition strips and height differences in the doorway which we hope to eliminate.
I’m just working on finalizing all the design details, and will share them with you guys next week along with the images that inspired the look!
And of course, be sure to check in on all the other one room challenge participants!
