Design is in the details, and time and time again I’m reminded how much of a difference those small details can make. We’ve been working on a refresh of our kids bedding, and adding in some extra layers for the cooler months. Jack’s room is small, so we really have to maximize wherever we can. I love how the Annie Selke textiles bring different textures and tones make the space feel so much more inviting. Here’s some of my favourite tips that I used in his room to achieve a layered and collected look.

1. WHITE IS A GREAT BASE TO LAYER ON

I don’t always go with white basics, but when in doubt, its always a great base. It allows you to easily layer in different textures and colours while still giving some contrast. My go to is often a white linen duvet cover. I love the subtle texture and easy look the fabric gives.

2. YOUR SHAMS DON’T HAVE TO MATCH YOUR DUVET

If you choose a sham in a different fabric, it allows you to add in one more layer. On Jack’s bed, I chose an olive green pillow cover to go with the white linen duvet. If I had matched the sham to the duvet, there would have been a lot of white at that end of the bed, and I love the extra tone the green adds.

3. MIX DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND TONES

My favourite way to get a simple layered look is by adding in textiles that are solid but have really beautiful texture, and then mixing in some different colours and tones. The bedspread on the end of Jack’s bed has a rustic look, and is made up of a pebbled chambray weave. I think it’s my favourite piece of bedding in his room, and I’m so glad I also got the matching sham cover. The thick weave of the throw pillow also adds some contrast.

4. ADD BLANKETS ABOVE AND BELOW YOUR DUVET

This is one of my favourite styling tricks. Adding bedspreads and throws is a great way to show the different layers when you fold back the bedding. Under the duvet, but above the top sheet, I layered a charcoal linen throw blanket with a fringed edge. I love the contrast and detail it adds, and how it makes the layers much more visible.
